The Secret to Smart Composting

The problem with drying manure

Currently, in some countries farmers still dry their manure, believing it benefits the soil. However, this practice can reduce soil fertility and crop yields. Why? When manure dries, moisture evaporates, leaving behind high salt concentrations like sodium chloride and potassium chloride. These salts increase soil salinity, which can harm plant roots by depriving them of water and nutrients. Additionally, dried manure releases nitrogen too quickly, causing nitrogen leaching and potentially contaminating groundwater.

Why composting is better

In contrast, composting is a controlled process where microorganisms break down manure into stable compost rich in humus. This method stabilizes nitrogen, ensuring plants receive nutrients gradually, reducing environmental risks. Composting also improves the water retention of dry soils, making it especially useful in areas with low rainfall. This not only promotes healthier plant growth but also conserves water.

Composted manure also produces a more natural smell when wet compared to dried manure, which tends to emit unpleasant odor in humid conditions.
